It’s unusual for me not to blog every other week, but the past month has been different; I’ve been farming.
For those of you who regularly read The Voice of Reason, you know I don’t like to blog unless the topic has value. I don’t post pictures of my lunch, a restaurant meal I ordered or discuss overtired nutrition news. Content may be king, but it’s worthless if it doesn’t empower, inspire or entertain.
To that end, I thought I’d share with you the fruits of my labor; finally, I have something to show for it.
When I began this farming project two years ago, I didn’t know a thing. To me, The Back 40 referred to a restaurant on Avenue B at 12th Street. Today, my understanding of farming terminology and technology is far different, deeper and meaningful.
So, have I morphed into an agronomist or horticulturist? Not a chance. But I do consider myself a modern day farmer. I feel responsible for the soil, our water, the bees, trees and animals who call the land their home.
Certainly, most people don’t have the opportunity to farm 350 acres, but my hope is that this post will inspire you to begin a container garden, a butterfly garden, a kitchen garden or, of particular interest to my urbanite friends, a roof top garden.
Winter is around the corner, so now’s the time to start your homework. Read about different garden types; inquire about your growing zone; study fruits, flowers and vegetables of interest to you. Come springtime, you’ll be ready to begin a farming project of your own. The better you plan, the more prolific your garden will grow.
